14K vs 18K Gold Engagement Rings: Price, Color and Wear

Metal guide · Updated 6 October 2026
Quick answer

14K gold is 58.3% pure gold. 18K gold is 75% pure gold. 18K has a richer color but is softer, so it shows scratches sooner. 14K is harder-wearing and costs less. At Milagros, the same ring typically costs about 24% more in 18K than in 14K, a middle difference of $360. For most people who wear their ring every day, 14K is the practical choice.

What 14K and 18K mean

Gold purity is measured in karats, out of 24. Pure gold is 24 karat. It is too soft for a ring that you wear every day, so jewelers mix it with other metals such as silver, copper, zinc or palladium. In the US, jewelry must not misrepresent its karat fineness.1

Metal Pure gold Color Wear
10K gold 41.7% Paler yellow Hardest of the golds
14K gold 58.3% Warm, balanced yellow Strong for everyday wear
18K gold 75% Richest, deepest yellow Softer; shows scratches sooner
Platinum No gold Naturally white Heavy and strong; scratches give it a soft matte look

Color: yellow, white and rose

  • Yellow goldThe difference between 14K and 18K is easiest to see here. 18K yellow is deeper and warmer; 14K yellow is a little lighter.
  • White goldWhite gold is usually plated with rhodium for a bright white finish. Over years the plating can wear and the color can look slightly warmer. A jeweler can re-plate it.
  • Rose goldCopper gives rose gold its pink color. 14K rose gold often looks a little pinker than 18K, which has more gold in it.
  • PlatinumNaturally white, so it never needs re-plating. It is heavier than gold and develops a soft matte look over time, which can be polished.

Durability: which lasts better?

Because 14K gold has more of the harder metals mixed in, it resists scratches and dents better than 18K. This matters most for the band and the prongs that hold your diamond. If you work with your hands, play sports or wear your ring all day, 14K is the safer choice. 18K still makes a lasting ring, but it will show small marks sooner.

Which one should you choose?

Choose… If you…
14K gold Want the best balance of color, strength and price.
18K gold Love a rich yellow color and do not mind a little more care.
Platinum Want a naturally white metal that never needs re-plating.
10K gold Want the lowest price and the hardest gold, and are happy with a paler color.

Tip: put the money you save on the metal into the diamond. On a 2 carat ring, choosing 14K instead of 18K saves a typical $370, about the price of a typical 1 carat round loose lab grown diamond in our list ($367). See our price guide.
