Straight answers on what lab grown diamonds are, how they compare with mined diamonds, what our rings cost and how every stone is certified.

What is a lab grown diamond?

A lab grown diamond is a real diamond made in a laboratory instead of mined from the earth. It is pure carbon with the same crystal structure, hardness and sparkle as a mined diamond. Lab grown diamonds are graded on the same 4Cs and certified by independent labs such as IGI and GIA.

The US Federal Trade Commission treats lab grown diamonds as diamonds, as long as the seller clearly says they are lab grown. That is why every Milagros center stone comes with an IGI report that states how it was made.

Two ways to grow one. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) builds a diamond layer by layer from carbon-rich gas inside a vacuum chamber. High pressure, high temperature (HPHT) recreates the heat and pressure found deep inside the earth.

Both methods produce the same finished material, and neither is better by default. What matters is the grade on the report: cut, color, clarity and carat.

Lab grown vs. mined diamonds

Side by side, a lab grown diamond and a mined diamond of the same grade look identical, even to a trained jeweler using a loupe. Telling them apart takes specialist equipment at a gemological lab.

Our honest view: if you want the most diamond for your budget and plan to keep your ring for life, lab grown is the better value. If resale value matters most to you, a mined diamond holds more of its price.

What lab grown diamond rings cost at Milagros

How we certify every diamond

Every Milagros center stone comes with a grading report from IGI, the International Gemological Institute, an independent lab. It records the diamond's cut, color, clarity, carat weight and measurements, and states that it was grown in a lab and by which method. The same report number is laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle, tying your stone to its paperwork for life.

Check any Milagros diamond yourself:

  1. Find the report number on your IGI report. Lab grown reports start with LG.
  2. Enter it at igi.org to see the official online record.
  3. Look at the girdle under a 10x loupe, or ask any jeweler to, and you will see the same number.

Made to order in New York, or designed with you

Most Milagros rings are made to order at our New York office and arrive in 12 to 14 days, with free, insured express shipping anywhere in the US. If you have something different in mind, we design it with you in four steps.

Custom designs can take longer than 12 to 14 days, and we confirm your timeline before production starts. Because a custom piece is made only for you, it is final sale unless there is a manufacturing error.

How to choose a lab grown diamond jeweler

Lab grown diamonds are sold almost everywhere now. These five checks work on any jeweler, including us.

  1. Independent grading. A report from IGI or GIA for every center stone, with the number laser-inscribed on the diamond.
  2. Clear returns. A written return window and a plain list of exclusions. Thirty days from delivery is a fair standard.
  3. A real warranty. Lifetime cover for manufacturing defects and routine care.
  4. Reviews you can check. On product pages and independent sites, with photos from real buyers.
  5. A person you can reach. Call, email or book a consultation before you buy.

How Milagros measures up. Every center stone is IGI certified and laser-inscribed. You have 30 days from delivery to return or exchange, a lifetime warranty with free cleaning, polishing, stone tightening and rhodium re-plating, and free ring resizing.

Are lab grown diamonds real diamonds?

How much do lab grown diamonds cost compared with mined diamonds?

A lab grown diamond usually costs far less than a mined diamond of the same size and grade, so your budget goes much further. The final price depends on carat, cut, color, clarity and the setting you choose. You can also split your payment with Shop Pay Installments at checkout.

Do lab grown diamonds hold their value or have resale value?

Not much. Prices for new lab grown diamonds keep falling, so resale value is low. We recommend buying a lab grown diamond because you love it, not as an investment.

Do lab grown diamonds get cloudy or lose their sparkle?

No. A lab grown diamond does not change over time. If it looks dull, it is usually lotion, soap or everyday dirt on the stone, which a gentle wash with warm water and mild soap will remove. Free professional cleaning is also included in our lifetime warranty.

Are lab grown diamonds as hard and durable as mined diamonds?

Yes. Both score 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, the highest there is, so they are made for everyday wear. The setting is what needs care over the years, and our lifetime warranty includes free stone tightening.

Are lab grown diamonds ethical and better for the environment?

A lab grown diamond involves no mining, and its origin is fully traceable. Growing a diamond does use a lot of energy, and how clean that energy is varies from one grower to another, so we prefer to be honest about that rather than call any diamond impact-free.

Can I insure my lab grown diamond jewelry?

Yes. Most jewelry insurers cover lab grown diamonds. Keep your IGI report and your receipt, because insurers usually ask for both when they set your coverage.

Do you offer custom designs, and how long do they take?

Yes. We turn your idea into a design you can review and approve before anything is made. Custom pieces can take longer than our standard 12 to 14 days, and we confirm your timeline before production starts. Custom pieces are final sale unless there is a manufacturing error.

What is your return and exchange policy?

You can return or exchange your jewelry within 30 days of delivery, as long as it is unworn, in its original condition and returned with all documents and certificates. Custom and special orders are final sale. Email service@milagrosjewel.com to start a return, and read the full return policy.

Do you offer free resizing and a warranty?

Yes. Ring resizing is free, and every piece is covered by our lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty also includes free cleaning, polishing, stone tightening and rhodium re-plating. It does not cover accidental damage or work done by another jeweler.

How long does shipping take?

Made-to-order pieces arrive in 12 to 14 days. Shipping is free, express and fully insured to any address in the US, and you will get a tracking number as soon as your order ships. We do not ship outside the US or to P.O. boxes.
